NSDHS President - Debbie Owens
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
My term as President of the North Suburban Dental Hygienists Society will be ending soon, and I hope that during my tenure I have been able to make a positive impact on both the present and future of NSDHS. Thank you for the opportunity to lead and for your patience as I grew in my position. This is definitely one experience I will never forget!
My journey in leading the Association was not done alone. I was accompanied by a team of dynamic individuals, who shared in our successes and learned from our failures. But most importantly, my thanks go out to you, the Members, for all your support during this year of change. For without you, the Association would not exist. It has been my pleasure to serve you.
Building on the success achieved by our past Presidents has provided me with the mentoring and courage to take on the challenges presented before me. My goal as President has been to foster new leadership in which we can nurture growth and change, and to encourage the willingness of seasoned leaders to push ourselves a little more to help move our profession forward.
NSDHS Board is made up of volunteers who work hard to represent the profession of dental hygiene. When you attend a seminar or receive an email, think about how you can play an active role and assist our team. No role is too small, your opinions matter and your talents are always appreciated.
I have truly enjoyed this year, and look forward to continue serving NSDHS as Past President and Legislative Chair. At the May 2 NSDHS seminar, I will “pass the torch” to your new President Lisa Schmidt. I wish her all the best, her experience and dedication will serve as strength to our Association.
In closing, I do have one final request. I ask that each of you pledge your continued support to NSDHS and IDHA, and help our 2012-2013 leaders continue our journey to deliver the success our profession deserves.
With Gratitude,
Debbie Owens, RDH, BA
NSDHS President
SAVE THE DATE - June 10, 2012 Oral Cancer Awareness Walk
Dental hygienists play a vital role in early detection of oral cancer. Oral cancer is a disease that takes the life of one person every hour of every day, and over 36,000 people will be diagnosed this year alone. Unfortunately, oral cancers do not seem to attract the same level of public attention compared with other cancers and the dental community has the opportunity to change this and save lives.
With Illinois being the headquarters for the ADHA and ADA, we should be leading the cause for increasing public awareness and promoting oral cancer screenings for early detection.
In an effort to do this, please save the date and plan to join us on June 10, 2012 for the inaugural Northern IL Oral Cancer Walk to be held at Lake Arlington (2201
N. Windsor Rd., Arlington Heights, IL). Free screenings will be offered at the conclusion of the walk. Volunteers to help conduct these screenings will be welcomed. To make this event a huge success, we need as many members of the dental community and their family and friends to come out and participate. Registration will open after the first of the year and all proceeds will benefit the Oral Cancer Foundation. Check it out at: http://www.oralcancer-screening.org/events/index.php?eID=2202 Also, you can help us spread the word by liking us on Facebook and inviting your contacts to the event.
