SAVE THE DATE - June 10, 2012
Oral Cancer Awareness Walk
Dental hygienists play a vital role in early detection of oral cancer. Oral cancer is a disease that takes the life of one person every hour of every day, and over 36,000 people will be diagnosed this year alone. Unfortunately, oral cancers do not seem to attract the same level of public attention compared with other cancers and the dental community has the opportunity to change this and save lives.
With Illinois being the headquarters for the ADHA and ADA, we should be leading the cause for increasing public awareness and promoting oral cancer screenings for early detection.
In an effort to do this, please save the date and plan to join us on June 10, 2012 for the inaugural Northern IL Oral Cancer Walk to be held at Lake Arlington (2201
N. Windsor Rd., Arlington Heights, IL). Free screenings will be offered at the conclusion of the walk. Volunteers to help conduct these screenings will be welcomed. To make this event a huge success, we need as many members of the dental community and their family and friends to come out and participate. Registration will open after the first of the year and all proceeds will benefit the Oral Cancer Foundation. Check it out at: http://www.oralcancer-screening.org/events/index.php?eID=2202 Also, you can help us spread the word by liking us on Facebook and inviting your contacts to the event.
Sponsorships and volunteers are also needed. Additional information is available by contacting Alison Stahl, RDH and Event Coordinator at walk4ocf@gmail.com. or click here to view and print the sponsor form.

NSDHS/Harper
Student
Connection |
The last Harper College ADHA Student Chapter meeting of the Fall Semester was held on Monday, November 14th. This meeting featured guest speaker Dr. Angela Willox, DMD, MS, a Pediatric Dentist at Smiles for Kids Pediatric Dentistry in Arlington Heights, Illinois. Dr. Willox’s presentation not only covered her child-friendly office set-up and the treatment techniques she uses when providing care for child patients, but also included her experiences on dental mission trips throughout Africa and Central and South America. Following her presentation, the students strongly participated in the opportunity to ask additional questions and learn tips for providing dental care to their young patients.
