Being a member of this tripartite organization has many benefits. The American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA) is the National Organization for Dental Hygienists, the Illinois Dental Hygienists’ Association (IDHA) is the Constituent or State Organization for Illinois and the North Suburban Dental Hygienists’ Society (NSDHS) is one of thirteen components or local associations within Illinois.

Illinois Dental Hygienists’ Association (IDHA)
In 2002 IDHA signed and Organizational Associate Affiliation Agreement with the Illinois Federation of Teachers (IFT). IFT represents over 85,000 education, higher education and public employees throughout Illinois. IFT’s parent international affiliate, the American Federation of Teachers is the largest and most experienced union of professionals in the AFL-CIO.
IDHA, IFT, and AFT committed to join forces for the purpose of:
- Combining the practice expertise and credibility of the leading organization for Illinois Dental Hygienists with the political, organizational, and legislative strength of Illinois’s largest professional labor union and the AFL-CIO’s pre-eminent union for professionals to strengthen the effectiveness of dental hygiene, irrespective of employment status, in all matters affecting their professional lives and practice.
- Expanding consumer access to quality dental health care and coverage.
- Advocating the role of professional judgment in treatment decisions.
- Curbing abuses by third party payers and managed care organizations.
- Strengthening the political, legislative, judicial, regulatory and representational reach and voice of organized hygienists throughout Illinois.
- Substantially increasing the numbers of hygienists who belong to IDHA.
- Educating the general public, union members, opinion leaders, the media and the press concerning the benefits of expanded access to quality dental health care.
- Working in coalition and cooperation with like-minded groups of consumers, professionals, and organized workers.

- Limited Supplemental Medical Plan (LSMP) as of September 1, 2007 Through IDHA’s affiliation with the Illinois Federation of Teachers (IFT) Only IDHA members are able to take advantage of Medical, Prescription, Dental and Optical Coverage at a reduced rate. LSPM is designed for members and their dependents that might be uninsured due to lack of employer coverage or the cost of participation.
