Debbie Owens, RDH, BA
NSDHS President

Dear Fellow Hygienists and Colleagues,

I am honored and proud to serve as President of the North Suburban Dental Hygienists’ Society.

We are the largest component of the Illinois Dental Hygienist Association, and I am reminded of how hard our previous Presidents and Board member have worked to achieve this over the years. We need the history of this organization to encourage and mentor for the future. We need to have patience and passion as we offer this encouragement and assessment to our new members and leaders. Those of us who have been the history of this association must embrace those who are the future. We must remain as a team, young and old, novice and expert. We cannot be divided or we shall lose our momentum.

NSDHS Vice President

Allow me to introduce myself…
I’m Lisa Schmidt your new Vice President of North Suburban Dental Hygienists Society. I’ve been married to my wonderful husband Brad for 10 years (I sound like a contestant on Wheel of Fortune). I have a 22 year old son who just graduated from Iowa State as an Aerospace Engineer and has begun his career at Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids, Iowa (is it obvious how proud I am…)

I have been a member of ADHA and this component since my graduation from the Dental Hygiene Program at Harper College in 1999. The work of the Society is of great interest to me and I wanted to give something back by participating in some capacity for North Suburban. Laura Burke must have read my mind. She approached me and suggested I run for this office. I feel honored to be chosen to serve on this board. I will put my “all” into serving the members of this great organization. Thank you!

My Fellow Hygienists,

My 2 year presidency of NSDHS has ended and I have to say it was a great ride! I thank you for allowing me to be in charge of this wonderful organization. Your Board of Trustees is such a great group of dental hygienists and it has been a pleasure working with them. I leave you in capable hands with your new president, Debbie Owens. I will continue on this board as the Immediate Past President. My role is to help educate everyone about our Board positions and develop a slate of candidates for any open positions. If you are interested in joining our board or just being on a committee, please contact me and I will be happy to give you more information.
Have a warm and enjoyable summer.

Hi Ladies,
Thanks again for the toothbrushes and toothpaste! The Circle of Friends Developmental Pre School is where my son, now age 16, went to school. They support both typical kids who are included as peer mentors / students, as well as kids with developmental disabilities. Having NSDHS provide the materials for me allowed me to focus on the fun part of visiting with the kids. For that I am grateful. I am forwarding some photos that were sent to me. I thought if others in the NSDHS organization see that you offer brushes, etc, it makes it fun and easy to do a presentation to any age group. I wonder if many know we can get a CE when we do community service? Illinois special needs population is unfortunately under served.
Thanks so much,
Joanne Prifti-Nicholas

Volunteers Needed To Serve

MobileDentalClinic
Northwest Community Hospital’s Mobile Dental Clinic has been providing high quality oral health care services to our community for seven years now.  The program has grown tremendously and has operated at full patient capacity for the last few years.  We feel fortunate to have the invaluable support of Elk Grove, Palatine, and Wheeling Townships, our volunteers, Harper College Dental Hygiene Program and the dental students from the University of Illinois. From the beginning, generous dental professionals like you have been extremely important in enabling us to expand our service to the community.

Our newest mission is to help provide dental services to persons with disabilities. Northwest Community Hospital (NCH) has formed a partnership with the Little City Foundation (LCF) in Palatine to provide dental services to their residents. This process was started with a dental assessment of the residents to see how to best use the designated funds. Through philanthropy, a 2 operatory dental suite that sits within the LCF medical facility at 1760 W. Algonquin Road was constructed. Little City has hired a part time hygienist to oversee the program and provide direct services, along with a caretaker training, and patient desensitization component.

The Mobile Dental Clinic will provide restorative dental services 2-3 days per month at this location and would like to keep the MDC running at full capacity. In order to do this, we will need the help of our volunteers. If you would like to get involved either by volunteering at the MDC or helping out at Little City, please fill out the Mobile Dental Clinic volunteer application by CLICKING HERE, or contact me.

IDHA Annual Session 2010
By Gina M. Strelecki, R.D.H., B.A.

We had another successful IDHA Annual Session this year.  I want to thank all the NSDHS members who took time off and spent the weekend of October 1-3rd in Westmont, IL.  The NSDHS Delegation included, Bonnie Lyons, Sonia Kerr, Cristina Bordabeheres, Kathy Barnum, Trish DeDios, Jenny Rush, Erin Peters, Melissa Salzmann and Gina Strelecki.

The IDHA Annual Session enabled Illinois dental hygienists to discuss issues that will affect our future.  Saturday morning began with a Mega Issues Forum entitled “What does IDHA need to look like to meet the needs of dental hygienists of tomorrow?  A lively discussion looked at the future of Illinois dental hygienists from 1-5 years and 6-10 years.  The results will help the IDHA Board of Trustees plan for their Strategic Plan.

The IDHA Houses ran very smoothly.  A special thanks to Sonia Kerr for volunteering on the Reference Committee.  I am very proud of our first time attendees, which included Kathy Barnum and Erin Peters.  They were not shy at the microphone and contributed to a lot of discussion during Reference Committee Hearings.  I am also very proud to announce the NSDHS members who serve IDHA, Bonnie Lyons-Finance Committee, Debra Owens-Legislative Committee, Melissa Salzmann-IDHA Editor and Website Chair and Gina Strelecki-IDHA Bylaws and Policy Chair.

I encourage all dental hygienists to think about and decide where you see yourself and dental hygiene in 1-5 yrs. and 6-10 years.  Do you consider dental hygiene just a job or do you see it as your career?   If it is your career, I encourage all of you to think about taking part in your future and get more involved at any level.  NSDHS would be happy to mentor and guide you.

Thank you for letting me serve as your NSDHS Component Trustee!

2009-2010 BOARD OF TRUSTEES RECOGNITION
By Kathy Barnum, RDH, BS

This Board, your board is an amazing group of women. We vary in life experiences from the young, recent grads, newly married, mothers of babies, small children, middle school children, high school teens and young adult college students to mature, long time clinicians and married children and grandchildren. This variety is the spark of this organization! The dedication here to our hygiene profession is very impressive. All of us wear many hats in life and on this board so we are constantly juggling our full plates but because we all pitch in and support each other, this board keeps your component strong.

Let me introduce you to them……

Ashley Angelo is our newest board member. I had the pleasure of working with her as a student at UIC and I am enjoying even more working with her as a board member. Her ideas and suggestions are real and fresh. She is the co-chair for Community Service and you will be seeing more of her.

Angela Kozak is our most recent grad. Does it feel like you have been out a whole year already? Angela has given wonderful input into our board. She jumped a board to learn how this organization works and taught us a few things in the process. She has been instrumental in communicating between the Harper students and North Suburban as Student Relations Chair.

Alison Stahl is a very busy mom, clinician, student and instructor who found that little extra time to help us with Ways and Means and our 50/50 raffle. She is leaving her position to pursue more education. Best of luck to you.

Linda Argeros is another person with a very full plate but Linda has managed to run a coat drive in the fall and a food drive in the spring and had a baby (her 4th) in between! Thanks so much Linda.

Sara Hallowell is a very passionate hygienist who is very giving of her hygiene knowledge. Sara and I go back several years now when we presented dental health education as tooth fairy ladies for the whole elementary school! She is a past president and she returned to our board to maintain all seminar and handout correspondence. As a mother of teenagers, you know she can handle anything.

Jill Gauss is also a past president and wins the award for traveling the farthest to our component seminars. See what I mean by dedication. She just loves our group too much! She has found time to record our minutes at all meetings and offers her experienced advice all while working and continuing her education.

Sonia Kerr is the chairperson of my favorite committee, Dental Health. When I met her, I knew she was just right for this job. Then I had the pleasure of presenting with her and that sealed the deal. She is maintaining supplies and running this committee especially in February while working and being a wife and mother of 3 (twins the most recent!) She is so amazing to me. She sure has a true passion for dental health.

Debbie Owens loves politics and is great conversing with the legislators! Deb keeps us updated with current legislative news as Legislative chair. This is one of the most important reasons; I believe to be a member of ADHA, IDHA and NSDHS is keeping up with the rules and regulations that govern our profession. In my career lifetime, these rules have changed for the worse and for the better. The “for better” was because of people committed like Debbie and the actions she took to make it better. She does this while raising two children and working clinically.

Kimmy Yaras is our current past president and a very experienced member of our board. She has also served on the IDHA board. She manages to find time from her children and husband as well as working clinically to be a great asset to this board. I believe she has had two babies serving on this board!

Gina Strelecki was unable to make it tonight due to a family event but she is both a past president of NSDHS and IDHA. She holds 3 positions on our board, is a mother, clinician and make up consultant and probably does more that I don’t know about. She is a strong believer in membership on our profession so students you will be hearing from her.

Laura Burke has probably held almost every position on this board. Her experience and dedication keeps this component in tip top shape. Even after major surgery, it was hard to keep her away from the computer! She wears many hats in life, mother, grandmother, and clinician as well as holding 3 positions on this board. She controls the money, the website, and your reservations for the seminars. All I ask is to respect her, she deserves it!

Dona Gabzdyl is a very special person and one person you definitely want to know. She is not currently on our board but does over and above for NS and our hygiene profession. She amazingly manages many aspects of her hygiene related careers while completing her education, winning awards and raising a family. She recently presented at our March seminar and was just featured in the April RDH Magazine, From The Podium by Ann Marie DePalma called “Kicking the Out of Habit.” For NS she is our website designer and maintainer. Nsdhs.org is the best website in the state!! Please check it out!

To serve on the board of trustees:
1. You must be a member of ADHA.
2. You must attend 4 Board meetings and 6 Component seminars.
3. You must be full of ideas, able to share your opinion, and willing to give just a little extra time to the best profession ever!

NSDHS Congratulates Harper College Graduating Class of 2010!

Graduates

A message from Jackie Spierowski, Student Relations Chairperson

Congratulations to the Harper College, Class of 2010 on their graduation from dental hygiene school.  The Class of 2010 had a 100% pass rate on both the National and the Regional Board exams! This past year has been the first in which the National Board Exam has been conducted via computer. Students were not only able to choose the date on which they took the exam, but they were also able to take the exam at their own speed. Overall, the new computer exam got mixed reviews. ...CLICK HERE to read full story...

A message from Nancy Colovos, Manager of the NCH Mobile Dental Clinic
MobileDentalClinic Thank you to the NSDHS for its continued support of the Northwest Community Hospital’s Mobile Dental Clinic. We have been privileged to have over 60 volunteer hygienists at the clinic over the last six years and as we look ahead we ask that YOU will consider joining us.

As the NCH Oral Health Program moves forward, it is our intent to expand our program to include a fixed site dental clinic. This clinic will be located near the hospital and provide an expanded scope of service to our existing patients to include dentures, partial dentures, root canals, and space maintainers. The most significant change to the Oral Health Program will be providing dental care to the developmentally disabled (DD) population, starting with Little City residents and expanding to the DD population in the northwest suburbs. This expansion is dependant on philanthropic funding and the generosity of the volunteer dentists and hygienists that will come forward and will connect with our vision. If this is something that may interest you, please fill out the volunteer application or contact me and I will be glad to answer any questions you may have.

Thank You,

The beginning of October is a busy month for most people, especially if you have a family, children and a career. It is a sign of transition. Fall days for hygienists are filled with school activities, football games, fall yard cleanup and educating your patients and yourself. The month is also Dental Hygiene Month.

The first weekend in October was very busy for our North Suburban Dental Hygienists’ Society (NSDHS) delegates and alternates. Eleven NSDHS members attended the Illinois Dental Hygienists’ Association (IDHA) Annual Session in Westmont, Illinois. The session allows for exploration and networking in the field of Dental Hygiene.

Hygienists and dental hygiene students from all over the state of Illinois gather together for this special weekend. Approval for changes to the IDHA Bylaws and Policies are completed, dental hygiene students get a taste of Roberts Rules of Order, scholarships are awarded to dental hygiene students, there is recognition for dental hygiene volunteers, dental hygiene educators discuss their different programs, vendors visit to demonstrate and distribute new products and everyday dental hygienist get to discuss their challenges and successes of their careers. It gives us a chance to mingle and reconnect with old friends. It is a wonderful opportunity for all NSDHS members.

I want to thank my fellow NSDHS delegates and alternates: Cristina Bordabeheres, Sonia Kerr, Bonnie Lyons, Melissa Salzmann, Jenny Rush, Roxana Batea, Simona Catana, Dona Gabzdyl, Florcy Lombos, and Emily Perisin for taking a weekend out of their busy schedules and dedicating it to the health of their dental hygiene careers. I would also like to congratulate these NSDHS delegates for their elections to the IDHA offices: Bonnie Lyons (IDHA Finance Committee), Dona Gabzdyl (IDHA Delegate to the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA) Annual Session) and Cristina Bordabeheres (ADHA alternate delegate). Each year that we come together makes me realize how special and talented dental hygienists are to the overall health of the public. We love what we do and wouldn’t continue with this career if we didn’t. I encourage all of you to join us next October for a weekend of personal and dental hygiene enrichment.

The Soul Of Dental Hygiene
By Sara Hallowell, RDH, BS

That was my quest. After 15 years in clinical private practice, I was looking for the soul of dental hygiene. Of course, at the heart of dental hygiene is prevention. But prevention for whom? Only those with the financial means? Access to care is a huge problem for dentistry and it has bothered me for years. So, how can I help? At this point in my career I was willing to find out.

I went pro bono publico and spent the summer finding out where people of low or even no socioeconomic status got dental care. I went volunteering…I left my clinical private practice job for the world of Public Health. I met some wonderful professionals on my journey. They are the medical students, college students, administrators, grant writers, nurses, dental assistants, and dentists who lead me to the soul of dentistry. Those of you, who haven’t had the opportunity to work with the Northwest Community Hospital Mobile Dental Clinic, please do. They are a wonderful group of professionals in that colorful Winnebago! CLICK HERE to give it a try

Sara and her daughter Amanda at the Jesus House Health Fair for Heartland Alliance on July 18, 2009

A great surprise came with Heartland Alliance. They embrace people from desperate circumstances and offer them hope and health. Heartland Alliance believes in whole body care and has dental clinics included in their health centers. They understand that dentistry is part of total body care. Community Health is opening a dental clinic in their massive free health center in Chicago. It was wonderful see that dentistry is being accepted as part of health care. Public Health Dentistry is a completely different experience than private dentistry, and one I encourage you to try. The sense of community and pride toward your profession will engulf you.

I believe every clinician in dental hygiene; no matter where they work provide a preventative service that helps maintain the total body health of the patient. But my experiences with Public Health lead me to people of all backgrounds who’s sense of community and caring for the well being of the public make them the soul of both medicine and dentistry.

Washington Post Article Addresses Topic of Oral Health in Health Care Reform

In its June 23 issue, the Washington Post published an article titled “Putting Teeth in Health-Care Reform: Advocates Pursue Dental Issues,” which talked about the urgency of having oral health care in the current health-care reform discussion. The story, which headlined ADHA’s slogan, “Put Teeth in Health Reform,” also included coverage of this year’s Lobby Day, in which hundreds of dental hygienists spent the day meeting with lawmakers and their staffs discussing various issues pertaining to dental hygiene and oral health.

New Dissolvable Tobacco Product Raises Concern
1. Be aware of a new dissolvable tobacco product to entice teenagers as reported from Massachusetts Tobacco Control Program. The product Ariva, also known as Stonewall, Camel Orbs, Sticks and Strips, is a dissolvable, tasty flavored pill placed on your tongue or rests between your cheeks and gums. It is a finely milled tobacco merged with food-grade binders. Each pill is equivalent to 1.5 mg. of nicotine or approximately one smoked cigarette. Appearance is similar to candy, mints, or pills with flavors of Java, Mint, or Wintergreen. Due to the small size, two to three may be consumed resulting in higher dosage of nicotine causing individuals to become sick. Symptoms of smaller doses may include: paleness, increased saliva flow, nausea/vomiting, and sweatiness/shakiness. Larger amounts consumed, more serious symptoms displayed may be: blood pressure changes, heart rate, confusion and /or seizures/coma.

JOHN YAUKEY , Gannett Washington Bureau , May 20, 2009, reported, “ An amendment to the tobacco legislation recently passed by a Senate panel would require the new Tobacco Products Scientific Advisory Committee to study the public health effects of tobacco candy — particularly the risks to children — and report its findings to the Food and Drug Administration within two years.

Congratulations to NSDHS Member, Dona Gabzdyl, RDH, BS, MBA
Receiving the 2009 ADHA and Johnson & Johnson Hygienist Hero Award

Dona Gabzdyl, RDH, BS, MBA was one out of ten recipients to receive the prestigious 2009 Hygienist Hero Award, following in the footsteps of fellow NSDHS member, Donna Grzegorek - 2008 Hygienist Hero Honoree! The criterion is based on finding hygienists who are an an integral part of the dental team who go above and beyond daily practice. A Hygienist Hero donates time to charities to enhance oral health care in their communities. Hygienist Heroes champion to raise awareness for oral health care and are an inspiration to all.

In appreciation of Dona's extraordinary efforts, the American Dental Hygienists’ Association presented Dona the Hygienist Hero Award at the ADHA Annual Session in Washington D.C. This program is sponsored by Johnson & Johnson Healthcare Products Division of McNEIL-PPC, Inc., maker of LISTERINE® Antiseptic and REACH® Brands. Dona also received a $1000.00 honorarium to donate to the Northwest Community Healthcare Mobile Dental Clinic - her charity of choice.

Career Expo 2009
Dona Gabzdyl, RDH, BS, MBA
2009 Hygienist Hero

Dona’s winning essay discussed her personal pledge to actively make a difference in the community: to serve the undeserved population in attaining comprehensive oral health care. Dona worked with the Northwest Community Healthcare Mobile Dental Clinic on various community outreach programs both in and outside of the clinical setting. She was the only hygienist to participate in the WGN Channel 9 Television Network “Back-To-School Health Fair,” performing oral health examinations to hundreds of school children.

In addition, she conducts oral health presentations to elementary schools along with conducting various oral health projects with her Brownie Girl Scout troop for which she is a leader. One outreach program Dona participated in was a pilot research project entitled, “Determining Health Status and Health Disparities for an Embedded Rural Workforce” screening over 300 at-risk men, women and children who live in the Arlington Park Racetrack dormitories. This project researched the health-related risks and disparities of those who work on the backstretch areas, being one of the most vulnerable to lack access to health care. According to the results of the study, 46% had untreated carious lesions, 17% had soft tissue lesions, and 28% had periodontal disease. Identifying these disparities can now bring about awareness to this population so they can receive additional care and supportive services.

Dona attibutes her success based on her involvement as an NSDHS delegate and board member: "I thank North Suburban Dental Hygienists' Society for making me the person I am today. It is my involvement with my professional association that has allowed me to vote on behalf of dental hygienists and allow us to practice under General Supervision in Illinois so we can serve many of those who never saw a dentist or hygienist for preventive care before. Through the Mobile Dental Clinic, I can provide periodontal therapy and the highest standards of education for those who cannot afford to receive care due to financial barriers, with the same standards I provide in my clinical practice." Click here to visit the J&J Website to hear the other Hygienist Hero stories and to apply to become the next Hygienist Hero.

Donna Receives the ADHA Hygienist Hero Award

Donna Grzegorek a 28 year member of NSDHS was contacted by ADHA President Jean Connor to congratulate her for being selected as a recipient of the 2008 “Hygienist Hero” Award. This recognition is sponsored by The American Dental Hygienists’ Association in conjunction with Johnson & Johnson Healthcare Products Division.  The winning criterion was based on: "A hygienists' dedication to promoting oral health in the community and his/her overall impact on the community, based on the number of people affected. The Hygienist Hero's caring actions make a significant difference in their patients' lives. The Hygienist Hero is one that is committed to taking that extra step, every single day."

This is the first year of the esteemed national recognition. Up to 10 hygienists throughout the United States could be chosen. The judges chose 9 recipients.  As a recipient Donna will receive a commemorative plaque, $1,000.00 to be donated in her name to the healthcare charity of her choice, travel and hotel accommodations to the 2008 ADHA Annual Session in Albuquerque New Mexico June 18th - 25th, the ADHA Annual Session registration fees, complimentary attendance at continuing education courses while in Albuquerque, recognition at an event in her honor as well as presence in industry journals.

NSDHS is very proud of Donna and happy to have her represent our component.

of the 2007 RDH Award of Distinction.  Donna will be flown to Washington D.C. to attend the RDH Under One Roof Conference July 31st to August 4th.  After a "spa day", she will enjoy attendance at the conference, networking reception, award ceremony, amongst other planned activities.  Donna will be featured on the cover of the September issue of RDH Magazine and in related articles to follow.

We congratulate one of our own... Donna Grzegorek!

Congratulations to Donna Grzegorek, Finalist:
"Breath Rx Hygienist of the Year"

Congratulations to Donna Grzegorek who was selected as one of five finalists to go to Los Angeles and celebrated by Discus Dental DonnaGrzegorekand Modern Hygienist magazine as the "Breath Rx Hygienist of the Year."

Donna received the royal treatment by being shuttled by limousine and a Rolls Royce, dining at The Ivy and Spago's, staying at the well-known Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel where she was greeted by the media, cameras, roses, and champagne. According to Donna, "It was a trip of a lifetime with four other hygienists I will forever call my friends."

As one of only five dental hygienist finalists in the country, Donna expressed pride in being an active member of ADHA, IDHA, and NSDHS. Three of the five finalists across the nation were from Illinois!

Donna is featured in Modern Hygienist magazine covering this event. You can read about these five finalists along with their biographies.

On behalf of NSHDS, we congratulate Donna for her well-deserved recognition!

NSDHS Dental Health Chairperson, Sonia Kerr can help you with ideas, props, posters and puppets for your speeches. Everyday we spread our knowledge onto our patients. Just imagine how many people we could touch if we all just volunteered to share what we were educated to do.

Community service is not for that "other person" to do. It is what each of us should do and NSDHS can help. Email Sonia at sonia815@aol.com with any questions, comments or requests.

Tobacco Cessation Initiatives
What’s Happening with AskAdviseRefer?

An article in the most recent edition of the Hygiene Herald states that Illinois is soon to become the 19th Smoke-Free state.  Effective January 1, 2008, all work places, restaurants, and casinos will be smoke-free.  As hygienists, we now have an even bigger job to educate our patients and recommend various methods to help them kick the habit.

In the Hygiene Herald, Sandra Nagel Beebe, RDH, PhD encourages hygienists to keep those QUIT-NOW cards readily available to hand out to friends and patients.  Also, we can refer to www.askadviserefer.org for additional information or brochures.

Ask Advise Refer

If you need more QUIT cards contact your State Liaison Sandra at sbeebe@siu.edu or SCI Director Carol Southard, RN, MSN at smoking-cessation@adha.edu.

NSDHS' Tobacco Cessation Liaison, Lee Frank would like to remind all of you of the unique opportunity we have as health care providers to reduce systemic illness, prevent premature death and increase the quality of life for our patients and community.  The advice of a health care professional can more than double the smoking cessation success rate.  The American Dental Hygienists' Association Smoking Cessation Initiative has tools available through askadviserefer.org and www.smokefree.gov.  Quit cards are also available to disburse to your patients which refer them to 1 800 QUIT NOW.  Consider putting a display up in your office.  Contact Lee Frank, RDH, BS if you have additional needs or questions at lef1002@aol.com

Something to Smile About….The Generosity of Dental Hygienists
NSDHS thanks you for your generosity!

I want to thank each dental hygienist who took the time and effort to bring toothbrushes, dental floss and toothpaste to benefit homeless Haitians now living here in Chicago. Oral health, as we already know, is vital to total body health. But, it is also a part of regular life and personal care that add normalcy to an otherwise chaotic turn of events.

At the March NSDHS Seminar, more than 500 toothbrushes, 500 tubes of toothpaste, and 250 containers of floss were donated by the dental hygienists who attended. These outstanding gifts are going to A Safe Haven. A Safe Haven describes itself as a Social Economic Model providing and coordinating supportive recovery housing, treatment, affordable housing, job training and job placement services. Their services are available to the homeless and/or people recovering from the disease of alcoholism and drug addiction. They assist all, with open arms, when no one else can or will. This year, after the tragic earthquake in Haiti, they welcomed over 250 Haitian refugees in need of the most basic human needs. Thank you all for your generosity and for making the life a stranger brighter.

February Was National Childrens' Dental Health Month
Presentation Kits Still Available

National Childrens' Dental Health Month began as a one-day event in Cleveland, Ohio on Feb. 3, 1941. The American Dental Association held the first national observance of Childrens' Dental Health Day on Feb. 8, 1949. This single day observance became a week-long event in 1955, and in 1981 the program was extended to a month-long celebration known today as National Childrens' Dental Health Month.

NSDHS took great pride in celebrating National Childrens' Dental Health Month during the month of February. We are here to help you help your community. We have dental health presentation kits that include videos, pamphlets, posters, coloring pages and puppets. These supplies can be checked out for short periods of time to help you give presentations to schools, scouts, libraries, community centers or senior centers.

As a registered dental hygienist we have all taken the Dental Hygiene Oath which states “In my practice as a dental hygienist, I affirm my personal and professional commitment to improve the oral health of the public”. I believe it is our responsibility to share the incredible gift of our education with our communities. So I am here to help. Please contact me to check out our presentations kits or if you need help giving any presentations. My email address is sonia815@aol.com.

NSDHS Celebrates 40th Anniversary

The North Suburban Dental Hygienists’ Society was chartered by the Illinois Dental Hygienists’ Association in 1966, being the first component in the state of Illinois. The celebration of their 40th Anniversary was at the October 18, 2006, component meeting. Of the thirty-four NSDHS Presidents who served in the 40-year history, the twenty- three NSDHS Past Presidents who were able to attend were recognized. Seven IDHA Past Presidents, all who were members of NSDHS, were also recognized.
NSDHS 40th

Laura Burke, NSDHS Immediate Past President and Chair of the 40th Anniversary Celebration, presented a short history of ADHA and IDHA.  She then read a portion of an article written by Anne Guignon, which appeared in the January 2006 issue of RDH Magazine.

Irene Newman wrote a fictitious letter to her cousin, Dr. Alfred Fones.  The letter discussed the changes in our dental hygiene profession since the 1920’s.  During a portion of the program, Laura donned her white dental hygiene cap with the purple stripe.  While many laughed in remembrance of the “good old days,” the newer dental hygienists weren’t quite sure what to think about this awkward hat.  Laura talked about belt-driven hand pieces, making your own pumice, along with the many changes in the profession and the new directions that will be available to our profession in the future.  Total attendance that evening numbered ninety-eight.  Many of the NSDHS Presidents from the 1970’s had not seen each other in nearly 30 years.  It was a wonderful evening.

NSDHS Past Presidents

The NSDHS Presidents attending the celebration included (years served are listed after their name): Christina Newkirk (1971-1972), Patricia Avigliano Reese (1972-1973), Dorothy Parise (1974-1975), Nancy Lynn (1979-1980), Noel Angerame (1980-1981), Mary Beth Fleischhauer (1981-1982), Jane McGinley (1982-1983), Jan Dykstra (1983-1984), Pam Brunk (1984-1985), Geralynn Huffman (1985-1986), Wendy Mineau (1987-1988), Bonnie Klos (1989-1990), Bonnie Lyons (1990-1991), Laura Hennessey Aguilar (1991-1992), Marcia Swanson Schattauer (1992-1993), Susan Kopij (1993-1994), Lori Murphy Remiker (1996-1997), Michelle Browder (1997-1998), Dona Schulz Gabzdyl (2000-2001), Gina Strelecki (2001-2003), Joyce Aguinaldo Grubb (2003-2004), Laura Burke (2004-2006), and Jill Gauss (2006-2007). Sadly, two past presidents are deceased: Olof Egilsson (1968-1969) passed away on March 14, 2006 and Carin Kofron  (1986-1987) passed away on May 30, 2006.

IDHA Past Presidents

The IDHA Past Presidents attending included: Diane Rannin (1969-1970), Loretta Purcell (1970-1971), Christina Newkirk (1973-1974), Nancy Lynn (1982-1983), Jane McGinley (1983-1984), Mary Beth Fleischhauer (1985-1986), and Gina Strelecki (2003-2005).
